Belfast sinks, even though you’ve probably not seen one since you were young, are still incredibly popular in modern day homes.

We do get quite a few questions where customers say that their sink will not fit into our units. Here is a quick guide on the Belfast sink units that we sell and the Belfast sink required for the unit.

For those of you that are not quite sure what a Belfast sink looks like, here is one in the flesh, well the ceramic:-) You can read more about the history of Belfast Sinks here

Belfast sink unit sizes

The first one of the Belfast sink units that we have available is the 455mm high unit. This Belfast sink unit will accommodate a sink with a bowl depth of anywhere in-between 250-260mm, as shown below.

With this unit, you lose a little unit space but you gain extra space to store dirty pots of pans until they are ready to be washed:-)

455mm belfast sink unit with sink

The second of the Belfast sink units that we have available is the 495mm high unit. This Belfast sink unit will accommodate a sink with a bowl depth of anywhere in-between 200-225mm, as shown below.

495mm belfast sink unit

As you can see from the images above, the Belfast sink fits snugly on top of the sink unit and the worktop can overhand the sink slightly to blend the sink in nicely.

800mm wide Belfast sink units

We also have extra wide 800mm wide by 495 Belfast sink units, in case you are after a bigger sink but these Belfast sink units are only available in certain Shaker door styles such as Linwood and Malton.

Note: the most popular bowl depths for Belfast sinks are 220mm & 250mm.

Get creative

Why not make a feature of your Belfast sink and use a piece of worktop underneath it, just like Mike from London did below!

This short video shows why end panels are added to either side of a Belfast sink, to help hide the sides of the unit, as they are visible around where the Belfast sink sits.

Hi Emma, we would advise for you to create a support ticket here and send the link for the Belfast Sink through to us, so we can double check the height of the Belfast Sink. Our Belfast sink units are to accommodate Belfast Sink heights of 200-225mm & 250-260mm. If the sink is 240mm high then the only option would be to use the BSB6-450 unit which is suitable for Belfast Sink heights between 250-260mm and adjust the 150mm carcase legs down to 140mm.

If you have an inframe kitchen then they would need to do the same using unit BSB6-473.

Hi – I’ve bought a 455mm unit + 250mm sink = 705mm high. How do I resolve the 15mm gap I have to all of the other units and the worktop height?

I ordered a double bowl Belfast sink and base unit to fit, however our sink measures 810mm, so our end panels won’t butt to the cabinet, we have a 5mm gap.

What do you suggest we do?

Hi Anita, it would be best to send this question on a support ticket here to our aftersales team, for them to answer. Also let them know which type/brand of Belfast sink you have as well.

There are virtually no 800mm Butler sinks out there shallow enough (no more than 225mm high) to fit on to your Helmsley Belfast unit of 495mm. Surely I must be missing something as you wouldn’t make a unit that has no use?

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Hans, whilst the double Belfast sinks don’t seem to be as common as the single bowls, there are still some available.

We offer an 800mm wide double Belfast sink available on our website here, which is compatible with a 495mm high unit.

I need to replace the interior cabinet under our Belfast sink following a leak. This is the only unit that’s damaged. Is it possible to order just this unit. We don’t really want to replace the whole kitchen.

  • Ray Rostock says:

    Hi,
Is it possible to install a 600mm belfast sink in the 800mm base unit? or does it have to go in the 600 mm unite.

    Thanks

    Regards Ray

    March 23, 2019 at 1:17 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Ray, you would need to use a 600mm wide belfast sink unit, otherwise you would have a big 100mm gap either side of the sink and the drainage water from the draining board would not be able to run off into the sink.

  • Ken says:

Hi, if we have the 800mm Belfast unit, and a 255 Belfast sink? What can I do to get it level with the rest of the kitchen units? It seems you don’t have any smaller 800mm Belfast units

    December 15, 2018 at 10:11 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Ken, the only double Belfast sink unit we do is the 495mm high one, so unfortunately, you would have to go for a reduced depth sink or raise it up with some worktop or something similar.

  • Peter Jones says:

Hi, we have a Belfast sink (25Dx60W) that currently sits on wall brackets supported by cast iron legs, one of which is broken. It sits in what used to be a garage/utility but is now in the kitchen of a conversion used as accommodation and we would like to have a unit to house the sink as this would look smarter. When using a Belfast sink unit how is the weight of the sink supported? And how is the waste accommodated?

    February 26, 2018 at 2:06 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, the Belfast sink unit is strong enough to support the weight of the sink and the waste pipes go in the unit below and attach as normal to any waste pipes that you have in place.

  • Tom Stevens says:

Hello – I’m looking at buying a 495high belfast sink unit with a 225 sink.
Is there a particular set of plumbing pipes available for use with this? I’m having a dishwasher and washing machine installed too.
Also, if an appliance is only going on one side of the sink, should i just buy 1 end panel? The end panels also all seem to be larger than sink base unit, so do i buy one and cut it down?

    Thanks

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, usually with a Belfast sink 600mm wide, you would just need to use a singular plumbing pack. I have added a link below for you to take a look at. Unfortunately we do not supply a plumbing pack for you to use to link this up with your dishwasher and washing machine. I would advise speaking with a plumber, who will be best to advise what components you will need.

      https://www.diy-kitchens.com/products/appliances/plumbing-kits/cda-space-saver-plumbing-pack/pp1/wp1019143/#.WowGI-jFKUk

With regards to end panels, with the Belfast unit, you will need to use an end panel either side, as you are able to see the sides of the adjacent units at the front section. If you find there are any end panels over sized you will just need to cut these down to suit.

Hi, yes that’s correct. Drill holes for where the hot and cold water feeds go and also the waste.

    Hello,
I plan to put a 600mm belfast sink and cabinet next to an integrated slimline dishwasher. I plan to get the door for the integrated unit but do I need anything else on the sides of the sink/dishwasher (side panel for example)?

    Thanks,

    August 17, 2017 at 6:44 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, we advise when using Belfast sinks to fit an end panel either side for symmetry and also to cover the exposed carcase. Furthermore as integrated appliances do not have a carcase, the dishwasher would be visible down the side of the sink if no panel was used.

  • Gavin Beale says:

Hi, I’ve ordered the BSB6-490 unit along with the KC11WH-IN Derwent Belfast sink.
Firstly, the DIY Kitchens site only states the width and bowl depth, but not the actual depth of the whole sink – so I cant work out how much space there will be between the back of the sink and the back of the carcass.

Im trying to work out how much space we will have in the worktop for the tap hold to be drilled?
Im also trying to work out the ideal sized projection for a tap – we want a feature tap and something that is a decent size.
    Please help!

Hi, if you click on the grey section under the image then it shows a technical diagram and the depth is shown on here. The full measurements are 595 wide, 475 deep (back to front), 225 bowl depth external.

  • Gareth Haines says:

If I choose a 800mm Belfast sink, and I select ‘Belfast cut out’ for the worktop what size is actually cut out? Will this wider sink match the section that is cut out of the worktop? Or is the cut out done on site?

    February 11, 2017 at 10:14 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, the online worktop guide just prices for a Belfast cut out when they attend the property to take a laser template the sink will need to be on site as they will take a template from the sink being used.

  • Amer says:

Hello – if we buy one of the 495mm units then I understand that it could accommodate a Belfast sink with height between 200-225mm but if we want to be able to extend the worktop slightly over either edge (as you have in the photo), then do we need the 200mm? I assume the 225mm sink would go all the way up to the worktop top height level?

    August 26, 2016 at 4:53 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

If you use a 495 high Belfast sink unit with a 225mm sink and with the standard 150 legs then the finished height will be 870mm, meaning this would be the same height as the standard units, 720 high plus 150 legs. So, if you wanted to extend the worktop over the sink then this is still possible.
