How does left & right door hinging work?

How to tell left handed side from right

A recently asked door hinging question by a customer was “when selecting left or right hinged units, which side is the door hinge actually on? Is it as you look at the unit or is it hinged based on looking at the unit from the inside?”

Well, when planning a new kitchen, even a simple issue like this can start racking your brain, as you don’t want to leave anything to chance! Remember, there are no such things as silly questions. If you have a question and you are unsure about something, then ask and find an answer before you proceed. A few minutes of research now can save days of pain later on down the line when it comes to fitting the kitchen

Left-hand door hinging

When you select a unit to be left-hand hinged then the hinges are on the inside left of the unit and door, as you look at it. So a door handle would put onto the right-hand side to pull the door open from right to left. See the image below.

Right-hand door hinging

When you select a unit to be right-hand hinged then the hinges are on the inside right of the unit and door, as you look at it. So a door handle would put onto the left-hand side to pull the door open from left to right. See the image below.

With handleless kitchen doors, the handle/rail is built into the top of the door, so you just need to pull the door open from the relevant side of the rail. This can lead to much amusement with guests in your kitchen, as they don’t always know how the doors are hinged and open:-)

Here is a quick video to recap the above.

Hi Please could you advise me on the Luca Sky blue range.
I see the 450mm 5 draw unit is not available, We are replacing the fronts on our cupboards and we have a 5 draw unit. Will the draw front still fit? Also on the Luca plinth are they painted top and bottom edge so I could use them has 150mm filler panels.

Hi Peter, the Luca painted plinths are finished on the front face only. With regards to our drawer fronts, they may not fit onto other manufacturers’ carcases as the doors are sometimes different sizes. If you give our sales team a quick call on 01977 608 418 then they will be able to advise you on this.

    Hi
I have had to purchase a replacement door due to an incorrectly drilled hole for the door handle.

The new door has arrived with pre-drilled hinge holes but it is impossible to remove the rawl plugs that hold the hinge screws from the old door and the holes are way too big on the new door without these rawl plugs. Where can I find rawl plugs to fit your hinge screw holes please? or do you have any suggestions to overcome this issue?

    Many thanks
    Andy

Hi, there is an L shaped bracket that attaches the door to the wire work via a series of screws. The screws need removing to enable the removal of the door. The new door is then screwed into position and the old door can be used as a template for the siting of the screws.

With a double unit can the doors be hung from the centre pillar i.e. a right and left, or do they have to be hung as a left and a right? I want to have a double unit under a counter, but the counter would be double the depth of a normal counter so it forms a penisula in front of the cupboard. So the cupboards would be more accessible if the door openings were at the side of the unit rather than the middle.

Unfortunately the centre rail is not big enough or substantial enough to hang a door from, so there would not be an option to hinge doors from the centre post they are only hinged to a gable side.
