The solution to maximising the potential dead unit space in a kitchen is to install a magic corner unit instead.

To start off with, many of you may have a corner base unit in your existing kitchen where you basically have to lie down to get into the far end of it, to retrieve the items that you only use now and again. These units are great for the mass storage of items but not so great for retrieving them!

Dead corner base unit space

What does a magic corner unit look like?

From the outside, a magic corner unit looks like any other unit and unfortunately, no actual magic is used when the unit is opened, but the whole contents of the magic corner unit do come out towards you for easy access, which I kind of guess is magic!

Magic corner unit open

In total there are 4 trays in the magic corner unit, 2 are attached to the unit door that comes out to meet you and the other 2 trays are positioned inside the unit where the door was, just before you opened it.

Magic corner 4 trays

You do get a little less usable space in the unit because of the mechanism but the ease of use more than makes up for this.

Would door handles clash?

Magic corner doors pull forward about 10 inches then move to the side. The door and the mechanism open into the kitchen area and away from the corner post and fully open at a slight angle; this ensures that handle clashing can be avoided.

What magic corner sizes are available?

Magic corner units are available in 3 different sizes: 950mm, 1000mm & 1100mm wide versions.

Can a magic corner still have a drawer above it?

Yes, the magic corner units are available in the 3 sizes above in either highline or drawerline versions. You will obviously be a little more limited to the items that can be place onto both of the top trays as the drawer does take up some internal unit space.

I am redoing my kitchen and was wondering if its possible to alter my existing right hand magic corner unit so it’s left hand. I imagine I would need to purchase the mechanism to do this?

    • DIY Kitchens says:

Hi Naweed, yes the mechanism would need to be changed, as they are different depending on where the blanking panel is on the unit.

We had a magic corner fitted 2015 and never had any problems untiil today for some reason the mechanism had stopped working and we are unable to open the door. We have been able to remove the door amd there is nothing obstructing the door. It just feels like it is jammed and won’t pull out. Amy advice please?

      Hi Hayley,

Could you get in touch with the aftersales team directly and email a video through this email address (aftersales@diy-kitchens.com), so we could then refer the issue to our fitter, to see what the issue could be?

I have a Magnet magic corner exactly like the one you show. Recently it does not fully close with the top right hand corner sticking out by 2 cm. If you apply pressure if you close it you can hear a loud clunking noise as if one part of the mechanism is bumping over another. Do you think the mechanism is broken or could it be realigned/adjusted?

Hi, units & wireworks can differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. I would recommend contacting them for an instruction guide for the hinges and wirework used, that shows any adjustments that can be made.

Hi had the magic corner for 2 years now and the door has stopped closing flush or level and now slightly warped does this mean one of the mechanisms has broken stopping it close properly ?

Hi where is the recommended position for the handle on a magic corner unit? Does it have to be in side that pull out trays are fastened, or cannot go on either the opposite side or the top, or is this a risk to the door becoming loose from mechanism?

    February 15, 2021 at 5:39 pm
    • DIY Kitchens says:

Hi, as the unit is a pull-out mechanism, we would recommend the handle to be fitted centrally along the top of the door to ensure even pressure is applied to the mechanism when opening.

  • Alison says:

Do you have a detailed specification of the magic corner – I need to know exactly where this would sit in the 950 and 1100 units as we have a gas meter at the back of that cupboard. I think this will fit in the 130 void, but if there is room to move it to the front wall of the blank unit, this would be even better.
Also, the kitchen will be Luca gloss, so there are no handles to worry about. Can ask what the smallest corner post you do is?
It’s a tiny kitchen and I really need to make the most of every cm of space!
    Many thanks

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Alison, we have no technical diagrams on the magic corner but the mechanism inside it, fills the unit, so there would be no space inside of it for obstructions. With regards to corner posts for the Luca range, this is a 1 piece post that measures 70x70mm. There are no smaller ones available in this range. Sorry about that. This size corner posts allows for the 130mm service void. A smaller corner post would mean a smaller service void. If you need anymore advice on this then our sales team will be able to help on 01977 608 418

  • Meera says:

Hi, does the 1100mm magic corner unit have a bigger mechanism/baskets than the 950mm unit? Or do the baskets stay the same size regardless of unit size?

    February 17, 2019 at 8:59 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Meera, the mechanism does grow in size slightly for different sized units. The weight bearing for each shelf remains the same though and can take 25kg per Le mans shelf, so 50kg in total.

      • Meera says:

Hi, thank you for your quick reply. I am aware that the Le Mans shelves change in size according to unit size, but what about the magic corner baskets? That is what I am querying about. Many thanks.

Hi apologies, the Magic Corner mechanism is the same size, no matter the size of the unit.

  • Hilary says:

With a Revo corner unit the base of the unit is lower than on standard base units because the doors fold inside the unit. This has meant that my plinth has had to be cut around the bottom of the corner unit. My carcass colour is different to the doors therefore I need to colour the edge of the base of the corner unit. Is it best to use touch up paint or can you apply edging strip?

    January 23, 2019 at 8:32 am
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Hilary, the best thing to use would be touch up paint, as we don’t supply edging in door material or colour, just carcase material.

  • Rob How says:

On the kitchen planner it has a “void” section to one side and at the back of the magic corner unit. What is this for? Surely the unit is just what it says it is (eg 950mm x 560mm) so it just butts into the corner?

    Thanks.

    January 21, 2019 at 7:33 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Rob, all corner base units have a 42mm service void at the back for wires and pipework to run down.

The 130mm service void at the side is there to push the unit out enough, so that a 70mm x 70mm corner post can be fitted, so that the doors of the units can be opened properly and do not clash. This image shows the side service void and the corner post area. If you were to butt the corner base unit up to the wall then you would never be able to open the door of the corner unit.

      • Robert How says:

That’s good information. Is the corner post just for stability for the work top?

        Cheers

        Rob

        January 21, 2019 at 9:51 pm
      • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Rob, the corner post is just for show really and to push the units out for the doors to open properly. Without the corner post, you would have an unsightly gap in the corner. The corner post adds no stability to the worktops unfortunately.

Hi, is it possible to install a sink with the magic corner unit? Would the baskets below clear the sink pipes?

    October 30, 2018 at 3:55 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Jack, this would not be possible, as the plumping for the sink would get in the way of the baskets.

  • LMW says:

    Hi there

This may be a stupid question but am I right in thinking the bigger the size of the unit you choose the larger the baskets/ mechanism inside? If so, is this the same with the le mans mechanism? And the hidden part stays at 500mm width?

    Thank you!

    October 25, 2018 at 7:29 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Layla, the blanking panel is always 500mm wide. There are 2 sizes of Le Mans II mechanisms. The 1000mm & 1100mm wide units have the bigger mechanism and the 900mm & 950mm wide units have the smaller mechanism inside.
