Can I put a waste bin in a kitchen unit?

This simple answer to “can I put a waste bin in a kitchen unit” is YES! You could put a standard waste bin in an empty unit but that would not work too well, so we offer quite a few waste bin solutions that allow you to easily dispose of your waste and get it ready for recycling at the same time. Many of the waste bins that we supply have multiple waste compartments which allows you to separate your food waste from your cans and cardboard very easily.

Bin Unit

Waste bins do tend to take up a whole kitchen unit. So, before factoring this into your design, please ensure that you have left yourself enough unit space for everything else that your kitchen will need to accommodate like pots, pans, plates and food. You may also want to leave enough space for the bread and ice cream makers that you’ll probably acquire at some point:-)

Types of pull out waste bins

There are many different types of waste bins available. There are those that just sit in the unit, which you have to pull out manually to put your waste in and there. And, there are other waste bins where you open the door of the kitchen base unit and the waste bin comes out to you, for easier and more convenient access.

Highline waste bin kitchen units

Can a waste bin fit in a drawer line unit?

Yes, our bins can either fit in a drawerline or highline kitchen base unit. Waste bins that fit into a drawerline unit obviously will be smaller in height, so you get a little less waste disposal space but you do get more usable space in the kitchen. This is extremely handy for storing cutlery or takeaway menus!

There are some drawerline waste bin examples below.

    Hi there,
We’d like to fit two large pull-out bins within our 400mm unit. Am I correct that you only offer 2 x 32L bins in a unit that’s at least 450mm wide? I was able to find pull-out bins that fit a 40mm unit elsewhere. I was wondering if I can just order a regular 400mm base unit (with a hinged door) and install the pull-out bins I source myself to the unit and the door? Is there anything else I need to look out for?
    Many thanks!

Hi Zoey, the x2 32 litre bin mechanism is only available in the 450mm wide units. We would ideally need to see the measurements for the bin mechanism you’re looking to purchase, to advise you on whether it would be suitable for our 400mm units. The internal dimensions for our 400mm base unit are as follows – W364mm x H684mm x D510mm. If the bin mechanism fits within the measurements provided, then it is possible for you to fit the bin mechanism into a standard 400mm base unit. However, We would advise for you to send the the bin mechanism measurements over to us via the support ticket section on our main website – So we can double check this for you. Please be aware that you would need to order the unit and then the doors separately, so the door can then be fitted to the bin mechanism on site.

Is it possible to put any of the bin units under an oven in an oven tall unit? (Looking at the Luca Matt range). It doesn’t appear as an option, but wondering if it can be done if you order the relevant bits by the kitchen fitter.

    • DIY Kitchens says:

Hi Pete, this will depend on the oven unit you are looking at, we can supply the whole bin mechanism on its own if you want to retro fit it, you will need to have the correct space in the unit. I am not sure how advisable it is having a bin so close to an oven, as the smell of the bin will be close to fresh cooking food.

Hello, I’m currently adding the pull out bin unit to my basket but unlike all the other units there is no option for me to add soft close hinges, is this an error or does this type of unit just not need soft close hinges?

Hi, for the inframe kitchens, we would supply a combination door attached to the unit (the frame and door as one piece), this way the accessory will work just fine.

    Hi,

Please could you tell me what the max weight your 300mm wide waste bins can take? Thinking of using one for dog food in both the 20l and 10l bin within but worried that would be too heavy.

    Thanks,
    Charlie

Hi Charlie, the 10 litre bin should hold approx 4kg and the 20 litre bin should hold approx 8kg.

Also the 32l please? I meant more what a safe weight for the mechanism, rather than your answer seems to imply what weight they could physically fit in them?

        thanks,

We have decided to go for the 450mm wide with 2no 32l in. If we filled these with 12ish kg of dog food each bin would the mechanism break? What would be the safe weight for the cupd mechanism? thanks,

    Hi

Could you fit an induction hob on top of a waste bin unit or is this an awful idea in practical terms?

Thinking about hob and bin in our island.

    November 13, 2019 at 11:19 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Jane, an induction hob would technically fit above a bin unit but it is usually more practical having cutlery/pan drawers below it.

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Kevin, the pullout bins don’t have a lid attached to them but when you push the bins back in the unit then there is a lid built into the unit that sits on top of the bins. The image below shows how the bins would look with the internal lid on. Pullout Bin Lid

Hi please could you tell me if your 300mm bin FDB3-30GSH opens automatically when you open the cupboard, or do you have to manually pull out the bin or lift up the lid. I am looking for a hands free option.

    October 28, 2018 at 6:54 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Joe, unfortunately, the product quoted needs to be pulled open after opening the door, whereas the unit with the product code (FDB45-2X32GFH) can be pulled open with the door but it isn’t available in the 300mm wide unit though.

  • Rod says:

    Hi,
Can I fit one of your pull out bin systems into a 1000mm or 800mm sing unit, with real draw, such that it fits to the left hand side and under what would be the sinks draining board.

The bowl and plumbing for the sing would be on the right hand side, and I guess I’d just be faced with cutting down the length of the internal shelf and need to add a support halfway along the width of it for support….does this sound correct?

    May 30, 2018 at 2:28 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Rod, fitting a bin into a sink unit can cause issues. The plumbing kit and U bend can clash with the bin.

In an 800mm wide unit with a bowl and half sink there will only be approx 200mm of space to the side of the plumbing or approx 250mm with a single bowl.
A 1000mm unit would give 400mm or 450mm respectively and would offer the best chance of a bin fitting with a sink unit, but it would not be easy as you might not get the depth required.

Hi, do you have any waste bin solutions that would work with a corner?

    Thanks

    May 8, 2018 at 11:45 am
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Meanie, i’m afraid we do not have the option to have a bin unit inside a corner unit, this would obstruct the use of the corner unit if you where to have the bin attached to the corner unit door.

      • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, each bin unit is different and is usually screwed onto the door. If yours is wonky, please ensure that the unit is squared with a spirit level in all directions and leveled using the feet; this is a common cause of alignment issues. If it is still wonky afterwards, please give our Aftersales team a quick call on 01977 608 418 with your order number and let know of the issue.

Hi Jessica, having had the bin installed in my own kitchen last month, I got 2 of the plastic strips as well and they serve no purpose at all:-) Please just throw them away, we think it is some form of packaging from the manufacturer of the bins. I personally spent 30 mins trying to get them to fit somewhere but there is nowhere for them!

For waste bins that slide out, what sort of seal do they provide when closed? If they are full of food waste I would want a true seal too keep any smells in, but anything I have seen so far (including yours?) the lid seems to just hover above the bin, and not down on top of it, so leaves a few mm of gap all around.

    August 11, 2017 at 11:44 am
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, all bin mechanisms we supply have just a cover lid type as described, we do not supply one that has a true seal when closed.
