Can I use a Belfast sink with a laminate worktop?

A question that we were recently asked about Belfast sinks and laminate worktops was “Can you please advise if there is any way of using a Belfast sink with a white laminate worktop? I am not sure I want wooden worktops throughout and I certainly cannot afford 7 metres of granite!”

Well, our answer to this question is, it’s a definite NO when it comes to using Belfast sinks with laminate worktops. If water gets into the sealed edge of the laminate worktop then it will just blow/swell the worktop, as you would have to cut and re-edge laminate when fitting it next to the sink. We would advise strongly against it.

But, is it possible to use a Belfast sink with a laminate worktop?

As much as we advise against it, it is physically possible to use a type of Belfast sink with a laminate worktop. There is something called a lipped Belfast sink, that allows you to, for want of a better word, fudge it into place and make this a possibility.

Now, the overall look is not too bad but, the sink is actually raised above the worktop, see the picture below to see what we mean.

When it comes to drainage of pots, this is an absolute NIGHTMARE! You have to create a draining board and raise it up higher than sink and move it over the sink to allow the water to drip into it! And eventually, all the water moving over the laminate joints, either side of the sink will start to mould and swell up!

Possible solution

If you want to use a laminate worktop and also use a Belfast sink then why not get a bit of solid wood or granite worktop around the sink area and use laminate worktops in the rest of the kitchen? This will still be a cheaper option and could create quite a nice feature in your kitchen.

Hi does this apply to compact Laminate worktops also? Or can a Belfast sink be used on compact due to the water resistant properties?

Hi, we don’t advise using any laminate worktop with a Belfast sink, due to the cut edges on the worktop.

May I ask if you should ever have a join in a solid wood worktop where the sink is to be fitted ?

Hi Andrew, it wouldn’t be recommended as this would be a weak point within the worktop.
