How big is your kitchen mantle?

The standard external size of our kitchen mantle measures 1800mm wide x 400mm deep x 1210mm high.

The internal measurements of the mantle are 1200mm wide x 900mm tall (900mm tall in both 1210mm & 1390mm high mantles).

The 2 different heights of mantle that we can provide are below, with details where they should be used.

  • 1210mm high mantle. To be used with 1970mm tall units (2120mm with legs) & 720mm wall units.
  • 1390mm high mantle. To be used with 2150mm tall units (2300mm with legs) & 900mm wall units.

If you require the mantle a little wider, then the sales team can amend the width of the mantle in 100mm increments but this would incur a surcharge of £100 per 100mm change. The maximum width the mantle can be manufactured to, is 2400mm wide.

The size of the 2 units either side of the mantle are 300mm wide and they are both working cupboards.

How is a mantle secured to the wall?

You would need to use L brackets to fix the mantle to the wall, at the top of the unit.

Does a mantle have a service void at the back?

The mantle units have the standard 17mm void at the back, the same as a wall unit and reduced depth unit.

Which extractor would I use inside the mantle?

You would need to use a Canopy hood extractor with the mantle. The underside of a mantle is hollow, to allow you to install a canopy extractor.

How is the mantle secured? Does it rest on the units with l brackets?

Hi Michelle, the mantles do need to be secured to the wall using L brackets. We do not supply L brackets, these would need to be sourced by your kitchen fitter.

What size canopy extractor will fit within the mantle unit?

    • DIY Kitchens says:

Hi Alex, the internal aperture available with the Mantle Unit is W1200mm x H795mm. The extractor would need to be this size or smaller – However please ensure you choose the relevant sized extractor fan to match your hob. A good rule of thumb is to choose a hood that is at least as wide as your hob, and ideally 1.5 times wider.

Can you explain how to create a mantel shelf? – if you already have a chimney breast, this unit doesn’t really work.

Hi, people tend to create a shelf out of wood or end panels then finish it off with some cornice/pelmet to match the look of the kitchen.
