When designing a kitchen, some people want to add a little feature to it or make it look a little different. One idea people like to implement is a plate rack but they’re not quite sure exactly how to do it.
Well, the following information shows you the items that you would need to create your plate rack, as well as some examples found in real kitchens.
Please note that plate racks are only available in certain styles of kitchen. Plate racks are located in the Plinths/Panels & Accessories > Accessories tabs on the main website, once you have selected your door style. Check this area first before you start planning your kitchen.
Open wall units required
In order to fit a plate rack into your kitchen, you are going to need an open wall unit to achieve this.
When choosing your wall units, you need to ensure you get the correct height ones. See the guide below.
- 575mm Wall Units are designed for use with 1825mm Tall Units.
- 720mm Wall Units are designed for use with 1970mm Tall Units.
- 900mm Wall Units are designed for use with 2150mm Tall Units.
So, look for the tallest height of any tall units in your kitchen plan and choose the correct height wall unit to fit in with your design.
Once you know the height of your open wall unit, you’ll then need to think about the width of it. On our website, we have open wall units in widths of 500mm, 600mm, 800mm & 1000mm.

The plate rack
The plate rack itself is a pretty simple item, it looks like a miniature ladder:-) The plate racks are made from solid timber spindles and rails. 1200mm long but can be cut down and features 25 x 10mm diameter dowels at 47mm centres, set between 18mm top and bottom rails.

The largest open wall unit that we have available is 1000mm so the plate rack is large enough and can be cut to fit in there easily.
If you want a plate rack that uses the whole 1200mm space then you can use 2 x 600mm open wall units and cut the plate rack in half.
When you order our plate racks, you get 2 pieces of the plate rack, 1200 x 336 x 18 because the plate rack has a front and a back to it, to secure the plates, as shown below.
Inframe plate racks
To create an inframe plate rack, you need to order the plate rack as shown above and a piece of inframe material to cut to size to create the frame around the unit, as shown below. The inframe frame will be supplied in 1 length and it is 1,500mm long. The price for this is £40+vat.
This piece of inframe material can be ordered through our sales team. Just send your basket ID number to them in a support ticket and they will be able to add this none standard item to your shopping cart.
Location
Your plate rack can be located wherever you want but a lot of people place this above the kitchen sink, if there is no window present. This allows you to wash, dry and put you plates away without having to move your feet!

We bought a plate rack as part of our kitchen from DIY Kitchens. It’s useful to add that you actually need to order two plate racks (one for the front and one for the back of the cupboard).
We have received our kitchen, complete with unassembled plate rack, (4 lengths of pre-drilled wood and numerous spindles), I’m not sure which is the best way to assemble these as two of the pre-drilled lengths are wider than the other two. Do they go at the top, front or back of the plate rack? What works best?

Hi, you don’t seem to sell any units with plate racks in them. Is it possible to have one made?
In most ranges you can purchase an open unit and a plate rack separately, depending on the door style, some ranges have plate rack units such as the Harewood in-frame range.
For example in Linwood you could order – MOW6 600 open wall unit and ILWOPR12 1200 plate rack

I’m looking for a little help, we’ve had a kitchen fitted but it’s not completed & our builder has disappeared on us. We have a bridging cupboard above our sink which we cant get a door for so I’m looking for a plate rack 100cms x 36cms is this something you can help with please.
Hi, we do sell most types of units but we only sell complete kitchens with a minimum order value of £750 due to every kitchen being made by hand. We do not carry stock of pre build units I’m afraid.
