Do you have any tips for placing a hob in a corner?

A question that we were recently asked  was do you have any tips for placing a hob in a corner, preferably with pan drawers underneath? Or an L shape unit with 3/4 carousel?

Corner hob over a pan drawer

Well, if you wanted to use a pan drawer in a corner then it would have to be packed out with end panels either side, to allow for the drawers to open. Due to the amount of space that this will take, we generally advise against it and we would advise getting a designer/fitter to ensure the position works with the space you are proposing in your kitchen.

Hob over an l shaped unit

If you needed to put the hob over an l shaped unit, again access would be an issue and also the surface area would not be deep enough. Ideally you would have to use a diagonal corner unit as shown on the right of the image below.

You may run into issues as well, having to cut into the joins of 2 laminate worktops on the corner. You may need to go for a solid surface worktop like quartz, so that your hob can be slotted into a neat cut-out.

Can I have a pan drawer under an Induction hob?

If you are planning on having your hob (induction, gas or electric) on a straight run then you can have any unit that you like below it. The hob basically sits within the worktop and does not encroach into the unit space.

Please note that some induction hobs can be quite deep, so please ensure that you consider this when using a pan drawer unit below with a cutlery tray, as space could be very tight and unless your worktop is 40mm deep then the bottom of the hob could collide with the contents of the drawer below. Most inductions are 40-60mm deep, so 20/30mm worktops will be an issue.

Another thing that you need to be mindful of is there will be some wires for electric or gas that will need to go out of the back of the unit, into the 42mm service void, to connect to a power/gas source.

Here are some examples of hobs above some kitchen units.

Hi – we have an induction hob with 58mm depth. We would like to get the 1000mm 2 pan drawer + cutlery drawer. What is the height from the top of the cutlery drawer to the top of the unit. Basically the sides and back of the cutlery drawer aren’t to the very top of the frontal for the drawer. Please could you tell me that distance. We would like to have a 20mm worktop. Will this work?

Hi, I’m going to assume you’re referring to the 2 pan drawer unit, which has an internal drawer to the top of the unit.

Internal sizes for the internal top drawer on the 1000mm 2 pan drawer unit are H75mm X D460mm X W920mm.

To ensure the drawer opens correctly, The height for hob a in a 2 pan drawer unit + internal drawer would be approx. 110mm (plus worktop thickness) – You have not stated the worktop thickness, so I would be unable to advise whether it would work or not.

However with the info provided, you should be OK to work this out now. If not, please create a support ticket and we will take a look.

    Hi,

Our hob is 800mm wide with 51mm thickness. The counter top is 200mm. We’d like 60cm wide 3 pan drawers unit under this. Will this work? Or will we need 2 pan drawer units? Thanks.

Hi, this wouldn’t work. The 3 drawer unit has a space of 25mm + the depth of the worktop giving 45mm in total.

If the hob is 51mm in depth this wouldn’t work. You would either need to change to a 30mm worktop, or go for the 2 pan drawer unit as you mentioned.

    Hello,
Can you tell me if an induction hob can be fitted over a join in a solid wood worktop or does it have to be in a single length of counter,
    Many thanks

Hi Althea, there is nothing stopping you doing this as the weight of the worktop is supported by the units but the cutout for a hob takes a lot of the worktop away and you would only be joining the 4 small bits that were left, which might be a little delicate.

Hi, the hob should work with the 30mm worktop. You may have to cut a small section out of the front top rail but this would not effect the rigidity of the unit and would not be visible.

Can a hob be inserted symmetrically over two 900wide pan drawers without compromising the sides of the cabinets?

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, this would be totally dependent on the depth required for the hob vs worktop thickness plus 18mm available depth before you hit the drawer runner, so without knowing the depth needed for the hob it is difficult to answer but in most cases, you would have to cut down the side gable and use just a two pan drawer unit rather than 3 pan drawer.

Yes spot on the more room the better but 300mm should be ok for most pan handles at the side plus the extractor close enough to do it’s job properly but not in the way to bang your head so I guess it depends on the height of the ceiling and length of the ducting cover but most extractor manufacturers say 700mm to 800mm minimum. The gap above next to a wall unit and extractor should be 70mm on a gas hob so that your wall unit doesn’t catch fire and you have cleaning room which tends to be grease from cooking which is combustible, many people do not do this or want this gap for some reason which is ok for electric induction hobs but not gas safety first people.

    Hello,

Can you fit a hob that needs 50cm under the counter into a 1100mm corner unit, over the space where the 60cm door would open? I can’t tell if the piece that runs the length of the unit at the top front will leave the space needed for a hob?

    Thank you!

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, If you wish to mount the hob over the 600 section of an 1100 corner unit this is not an issue, providing the corner unit does not contain any wirework or drawers/internals drawers.

hi, could you tell me, does a gas hob need to be a certain distance away from a wall or a unit to either side of it ? before i discovered your brilliant website i used another companies kitchen planner app & i believe that gave me the impression you needed a min 400mm either side……which is slightly scuppering my plans (so hopefully its not the case) . also could i ask the optimal distance in height between the gas hob & the bottom of an extractor…many thanks

Hi, currently building regulations dictates than a extractor has to be at least 750mm away from a gas hob. In regards to the distance at either side of the hob I would say 300mm should suffice.
