Square edged laminate worktops

When you order your Laminate worktops from DIY Kitchens, you get a choice of 2 different edge profiles. Square Edged & the more well known Quadra profile. These are explained in more detail below.

Quadra profile laminate worktops

The Duropal Quadra profile gives a nice rounded edge to the front of your worktop, which gives a smooth finish. The front edge of a Quadra profile worktop is produced using a process called postforming where the top surface and front edge are formed from one continuous piece of laminate.

Please note that Quadra profile worktops CANNOT be used over curved base units.

Square edged laminate worktops

Have you ever wanted a laminate worktop, shaped to match the curves on your base unit? Well now you can!

Once you have chosen a laminate worktop finish, you can select several Square Edged pieces to match the layout of your kitchen. These pieces are available for use with curved ends, island layouts, peninsular layouts and much more.

The square matching edges are applied to make the worktop look like it has been moulded to shape, with no bare chipboard edges showing.

Square Matching edges are a hardwearing plastic edging, either 1.5mm or 2mm in thickness (depending on the worktop) that have a solid colour throughout the material, so you can see an unobtrusive colour-matched edge rather than the dark brown edge normally seen with standard laminate edging.

Square Edged laminate worktops are incredibly versatile and can be used on straight lines, internal curves, external curves and even S-Shapes.

Important information

Quadra Profile and Square Edged worktops CANNOT be jointed together. If you have curved worktops as part of your design then you will need to purchase straight lengths of the Square Edged worktops as well, if you have a run in your kitchen that requires a straight length of worktop.

The exception to this is where you have a stand-alone shaped kitchen island. This could be in Square Matching edge even if the rest of the kitchen is Quadra profile. This would of course depend on you being happy with the slightly different appearance of the two profiles.

Also, due to the difference in materials and the manufacturing processes, the edges may have a “slightly” different appearance to the worktop but this is within industry tolerances.

Hi, where can you get the Square Matching Edges you mention in your post above (i.e. the product that provides the solid colour around the edges of the edging strip, to provide a neater finish)?

Hi Ellie, Square Edged worktops come edged, As square edged worktops are edged by a machine. Unfortunately additional PP edging is not provided with the square edged worktops. The reason behind this is due to the supplier advising against edging being fitted on site, on post formed worktops. They would always request that this is factory fitted.

I’m just starting to design our kitchen and would like to have a matching laminate upstand to go with the worktops. Do you supply these as well?

Please can you tell me if the Quadra profile laminate worktop comes as standard with edging on the front and both sides and if so is it part of the manufacturing process?

Quadra worktops are only finished on one long edge (front). The ends and rear are not edged.

If you purchase a breakfast bar in Quadra then the two long sides are finished (front + back) but the ends still need finishing.

You would need to purchase square-edged worktops, if you wanted the front and ends finished.

Can I buy the 2mm edging strip to cover the ends of cut square edged laminate surface? As the standard sizes are not suitable.

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Simon, you cannot purchase this I’m afraid, as it needs to be factory fitted and machine applied.

        OK, thanks.
So for the square edged breakfast bar sizes, they are only available in sizes listed? Such as 2000 x 940 or 3000 x 940 ? If I require 2400 x 940 I’m out of luck?

Hi Simon, the sizes that you see on the website are the only ones that are available I’m afraid.

      • Simon says:

Final question (I think) – what’s the best way to finish a cut square edged worktop (as both ends would be visible and the run is not a standard length)? (One end would be next to cooker/range so slightly less visible. Or should I just avoid the square edged finish!?

      • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Simon, the PVC edging that is on the Square Edged worktops is very difficult to apply on site and really requires to be applied by a specialist machine. Therefore, I would not recommend trying to apply this yourself.

If you know the exact measurement for your worktop you require, we can request a price from our supplier, to manufacture and edge the worktop to that size for you. Just give our sales team a call on 01977 608 418 (M-F 9-5)

We’re going to be installing a 300mm wide line of base cabinets. Can you ship a 300mm wide worktop to match?

    August 16, 2018 at 5:58 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Dee, we do not supply wood or laminate worktops in 300mm wide pieces. Granite/quartz are cut to size by our supplier, after they have laser templated your kitchen, so you should be able to get a smaller size in that material.

    Hi,
I am planning to use 940mm square edge Laminate worktops with radiused ends on a peninsular unit/Breakfast Bar section of the kitchen but unable to incorporate the Quadrant base units at the end in the layout to match the standard radius due to space limitations. Can DIY Kitchen supply worktops with 100-150mm Radiused ends?

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, the worktops are bought in from another supplier, so they can only be supplied as per the website spec i’m afraid and we are unable to offer bespoke pieces or changes to them. Sorry about that.

    Hi DIY kitchens,
I am looking to order your crystal white laminate breakfast bar, I see you have 2 options in width, 670 or 940, I am looking at the square edge, and it says these are bespoke orders, so could I have this made into a 800 wide? The 670 is too small, and the 940 is too wide
    Many thanks

    May 17, 2017 at 3:50 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, the “bespoke” refers to worktops made to order for an individual customer, they are not stocked items. However, you can only choose from sizes that are on the website. You would need to cut a worktop down to 800mm and order edging tape for the cut edge.

Can the square edge island still be cut to size if I only wanted say 1100mm instead of 1280mm?

    April 26, 2017 at 3:55 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, the worktop can be cut on-site but you will lose the curves off of one side, unless you can round them off again. Edging tape can be purchased but it will be in laminate. Please give the sales team a call on 01977 608 418 if you need any further clarification on this.

Hi, I am about to install a new kitchen and I am looking at your ‘square edge laminate worktops’. can you tell me how they are joined, does it need a’hockey stick’ joint or can they be square butted and what type of sealer/adhesive is required?

    April 22, 2017 at 10:49 am
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, a butt and scribe joint would be best [hockey stick]. You will also need some worktop mitre bolts and some PVA waterproof glue.

  • James says:

How do you work out the measurements for a worktop? How much overhang should be allowed for at the rear front and side of wall units? I have planned a run of 5 units from the wall and with one end panel. The total wall unit width is 3300.

    April 18, 2017 at 10:51 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, usually for worktops we would say to calculate the base unit widths add them together and then add 40mm for each end, as this will include the end panel and 20mm overhang. 600 Deep would give an 18mm to 20mm front overhang depending on the thickness of the door style chosen.

I am having my crystal white laminate worktops fitted as we speak. Laminate is meant to be great for stain resistance but I’ll still have a cloth to hand for any spills, might only start eating white foods!
