Corner unit planning

When planning your new kitchen design, one of the first considerations about units that you’ll need to make is regarding the corner unit. Always start planning from the corner and decide on what type of corner unit you are going to have, to help you make the most of all your kitchen space.

Get the planning wrong and you’ll end up having to store things in the back of the corner unit that even a contortionist would have problems getting them back out again!

I am looking to install a 900mm base corner unit with a 150mm base pull out wire basket against it. What is the absolute minimum size we could cut the corner post down to allow these to open properly. Small kitchen only 2140mm wide so space is tight.

      Hi David,

This is dependent on the range you are looking at as the Luca range has pre-formed corner post, that are made 70mm x 70mm as this gives the j profile at the top to match the doors. The rest of the ranges ideally need the corner post to be no smaller than 40mm x 40mm to prevent handles from clashing.

    Hi there,

Planning my kitchen and I hit a bit of bother.

We are looking to get a straight corner unit but our alcove area is 870mm wide x 300mm deep and next to it, we are putting a drawer unit 600mm wide, 560mm deep. When planning the units I get a error message saying I don’t have enough space at the alcove due to the 130mm void area.

Unfortunately, you don’t sell straight corner units smaller than 800mm wide, do you have any suggestion?

    Thanks,

Hi there, is it possible to get an 800mm corner base unit with a 400mm wide door rather than a 300mm wide door? I know the blanking panel is always 500mm but our kitchen is a narrow u shape with an archway at the top of the U meaning that the top of the U has an extra 20cm of depth compared to the side walls. We’d like to have an in-built oven at the top of the U in between two corner base units with filler panels to join each side, but given we have extra depth we don’t need the narrow 300mm doors. Could we adapt this ourselves if we ordered the corner units dry assembled and bought additional 400mm wide doors? Thanks.

Hi, it’s not possible to get an 800mm wide corner base unit with a 400mm wide door i’m afraid. You would need to order a 900mm wide corner base, that comes with a 400mm wide door. If you request the unit dry assembled then you would need to cut 100mm off the end and reconstruct it to fit into the space that you have. If you need anymore advice on this then our sales team will be able to help on 01977 608 418.

Might be a silly question, but would it be possible to have a 900 Le Mans unit with a 550 or 600 door, to increase the void area? We really would like this unit, but the waste pipe runs in that corner.

    Best Regards,
    Anja

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Aanj, the blanking panel of a corner unit is always 500mm, so if you wanted a 600mm wide door on a Le mans unit, they you would need to choose the 1100mm wide version.

So, just to recap, 500mm blanking panel and a 600mm door = a 1100mm wide Le mans units. But, the total space needed in our kitchen run for this unit is 1230mm (130mm for the service void, which allows for a corner post of 70mm x 70mm). The service void area always remains the same, it is the size of the door that make the unit bigger or smaller in width.

If you have not already read them, then these articles on service voids and corner posts will be useful reads.

    Hi,

Will a 900 L Corner fit through a 730mm doorway gap , eg with legs removed and it turned sideways ?

    February 26, 2020 at 10:18 am
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Simon, speaking from personal experience, no, the unit will not fit through any standard door in a house. The L of the unit makes it very difficult to maneuver through any doorway. You will need to request the unit to come dry assembled, so that you can take it apart to get it into your home. The only way people get around this is if they have double patio doors that lead straight into the kitchen.

      February 26, 2020 at 11:08 am
      • Simon says:

It doesnt need to be maneuvered just carried straight through the doorway so if the legs can be easily removed what would the dimensions be ? Eg I could carry through a box 900 x 900 x 730 is it bigger than that ?

        February 26, 2020 at 12:56 pm
      • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, in theory, if you had a gap that was 730mm wide and the unit had no feet or leg bosses on the bottom or any packaging on it whatsoever, then you would be able to get it through the 730mm opening with 2 people carrying it. You would need to speak to our sales team on 01977 608 418 to see if they can supply the unit without the leg bosses on for you as these are drilled in and glued into position on all our units.

    Hi,

We are looking to fit a base corner Le Mans 2 unit, 1000mm, with an oven on the other side of the corner.
Would it be sufficient to use a 70mm corner post, with a 130mm void behind the unit?
Is it at all possible to have a smaller void/corner post to fit our space better?

In addition, we plan to have a double layer of wall units. However the bottom wall unit isn’t the same as the top unit in the corner, as the same selection was unavailable. On the bottom we have an 600mm L Corner Wall Unit, and on the top a 300mm Single Wall Unit and a 600mm Corner Wall Unit.

How can we best make these match up?
If there is no corner post (so it matches with L shaped corner unit underneath), how much would this restrict the doors?

    Thank you

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Maya, the corner post/service void can be made smaller but you need to be mindful that the smaller this is, the greater the chances are that handles can clash when the door is opened.

This article talks about corner wall units. You will need a corner post, made out of door material filler, for the 600mm corner wall unit and the 300mm single wall unit.

If you need any further assistance with this then our sales team will be able to help on 01977 608 418.

    Hi
I am planning my kitchen and wanted pull out bin unit as sink base, but I cannot find among the options. Is there any way to incorporate double sink base with pullout bin?
    Thanks!

    September 12, 2018 at 8:35 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi Liz, there are no sink units available that have bins fitted in them. Bins require a lot, if not most of the space in the base unit. A sink also has many pipes that require a lot of space too and the bottom of the sink also dips into the unit. We do give the option to buy the actual bins separately. Once your sink is in place, you’ll be able to see how much space is left and whether you could fit a bin in there – https://www.diy-kitchens.com/accessories/waste-systems/

    Hi,

    I am trying to figure out what corner/wall units I need. The kitchen will have a large American Fridge to fit in, I was thinking a pull out larder (2300mm size) to the left side as you look at it to tie into a top box unit that then links to the next row of wall/base cupboards. I have a couple of things I would like to check;
    – If the fridge is 1790mm tall would the taller 2300mm larder be suitable to tie in the top box unit?
    – I have received an error when adding 720mm wall cupboards must I go for the 900mm high ones for the wall units?
    – Finally the wall units include a corner cupboard, you don’t seem to stock an L shape corner in a 900mm, they appear as a standard corner cupboard, in this sense do I order this and an additional 300mm cupboard to create the L shape I am after. With these standard corner units how do I tell if the if the blank panel side is on the right or left?

    Many Thanks
    Heather

    • Diy Kitchens says:

      Hi,

We usually recommend the 290mm high top boxes for an American fridge freezer around 1780mm tall with 1970mm (2120mm with legs) tall units and 720mm high wall units. A 2120mm tall unit minus a 290mm high top box, leaves 1830mm. Take away your 1790mm fridge/freezer will leave a gap of around 40mm at the top.

If you would like more of a gap at the top or a taller top box then you may need to go for the 2150mm (2300mm with legs) tall units and the 900mm tall wall units.

With regards to the L shaped wall unit, they are only available in 600mm wide versions. If you wanted to create a 900mm corner shape, you would need 1 x 900mm corner wall unit, which is 300mm deep. To get a symmetrical 900mm corner, you would need to put a 600mm wide wall unit next to the side of the 900mm corner unit with the blanking panel. This will give you a corner with the effect of 2 x 600mm units (597mm doors).

Blanking panel sides are selectable when you click the “Unit Details” button for the wall unit.

      I hope this helps.

    Hi,

I am looking to have 2 900mm corner le mans units either side of a range oven in a narrow U shaped kitchen. I understand the service void is designed to get the corner post to sit 560mm from the wall to line with perpendicular units, but how would that work with a range oven that is deeper? say 608mm without handles. Are the doors going to open properly or if so clash with oven handles. Do you have to increase the void?

    Thanks

    September 23, 2017 at 10:54 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, if the oven is going to protrude, you would need to leave a larger service void to ensure the doors line up with the appliance as the corner posts create the void area for the doors to open but if this is not in line with the oven then the doors would clash.

      • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, magic corners do need a corner post. Speaking from personal experience, my corner post only measures 37mm on one side and I just about got away with it, as I have a Luca kitchen with no handles:-) You will be OK with 40mm on 1 side.

I’m planning on having a 950mm corner (sink) unit with an adjacent set of 300 or 400mm draws. Can you tell me what the total distance the draws (including Norton draw fronts) pull out to as want to see if they will hit the sink unit door handle.

Also are the 560mm depths given without doors present as I am thing to sort out the need for a corner unit between the sink and draws. As such does the corner post sit proud on the blanking plate or do I just use one section of the corner post joining sink unit to draws to give clearance.

We would ideally like a 60cm induction hob with a 60cm downdraft extractor behind it. Is this possible using a corner unit measuring 1000 as in the plan on the front of your planning tool booklets, and can you fit a 600 drawer pack below it?

    September 30, 2016 at 7:56 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, the hob sits over either a drawer pack or normal highline unit and the downdraft needs to be installed into a separate unit behind it, these are usually at least 300mm deep but this will vary depending on what the total depth is required for the extractor.

Hi i have a question about the corner posts, i understand that we have to leave the 130mm void to allow for the corner post and its aligning with whatever unit you decide to fix to it however when the corner post is in place will there be a small void between the blanking panel and the adjoining unit? thus making width measurement wider?

    September 4, 2016 at 10:49 am
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, corner units including the void and corner post always measure 130mm longer than the size of the unit and rather than 560 deep as standard with a corner post fitted they will measure 630 including a 70mm corner post.
If you view the image below, this shows the additional depth of the corner, which does measure 70mm.

    Hi

I have another question. I want a boiler + consumer unit housing for my new kitchen. They are on top of each other and therefore I need a 1200/1300 tall x 600 wide wall cabinet to cover the lot.

Currently in my cart, I have added a mid-height, slimline base cabinet (1250mm tall) which seems the ideal size for it. Is it possible to use this cabinet as a wall cabinet (provided I remove the legs of course!)? I guess being originally a base unit, the J groove (We want Lucas White doors) is at the top, can I simply put in the comment section to install the door upside down to have it at the bottom? Or is it simpler to just install the whole cabinet upside down and order it with hinges on the opposite side (so left if I want right in my case)?

Or is it possible to simply order a door (1250×600) and some carcass material and let my fitter construct the cabinet himself (which he is prepared to do anyway)? Note that from your website, I cannot just add a door to my cart…

    August 25, 2015 at 1:07 pm

Hi, the easiest solution would be to order the door separately and the carcase material and build up on site. If you email your shopping cart id to (sales@diy-kitchens.com) with your request, then we can add the required door to your online shopping cart.

    Hi,
I am planning to do my kitchen soon and it will have a corner between a standard corner and a slimline unit (300mm).
I already know that I can order a custom corner based on an 800mm cabinet with 400 door and 400 blank. That still leaves me with a 100mm gap on the blank side of the corner unit (which is quite a fair bit) and the corner infill in the range I am interested in only comes in 70mmx70mm (Lucas White) anyway. What would you advice? Is it possible to have a larger corner infill? Is it possible to install the slimline unit off the wall (using wood battens between unit and wall) to make it appear a bit deeper? Should I order my corner with a 450mm door and 350mm blank (if that is possible)?
    Kind regards

    August 25, 2015 at 8:35 am
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, if you were positioning a full depth unit with a slimline, your options would be –

** the corner unit will still require a void from the unit to the wall effectively making the corner unit 900 wide not 800. You could either make a 200mm filler to cover 200mm of the blank panel at 400mm this would allow you to set the slimline unit against the wall.

** alternatively you could just bring the slimline off the wall 200mm but this would make the overall depth 500mm meaning it will only be 60mm shallower than a standard unit

        Hi,
Thank you for your quick reply.
Just a quick question: Why is it necessary to leave 100mm between corner unit and wall ? What is that space for?
        Regards

        August 25, 2015 at 2:39 pm
      • Diy Kitchens says:

It is a service void gap (usually for sink waste pipes etc) and it’s also needed to push the unit out so that you can fit a corner post. If the unit was flush against the wall you would have problems. The blanking panels are usually 500mm. The units in the adjacent kitchen run have a depth of 560mm + 20mm door. Unless you have that service void, units in the other run will jut out too much and you would never be able to open the door properly on the unit with the service void.

This article below and the images on the page will be able to explain things better.

        https://advice.diy-kitchens.com/customer-questions/what-is-a-kitchen-unit-service-void/

Hello, we are designing a U shape kitchen, it has a Center of 2200mm for cooker hood and hob. Please can you advice how to fit 2 corner units, an oven integrated unit and 2 small pull our lader units? Can the lader pull out bespoke to 200mm instead of 150mm? Thank you.

      Hi,

This video does not have audio, it is just a demonstration of the corner units available with sizes shown.

Thank you for your reply. It is difficult deciding! Could you tell me what material Remo Elm is, as it doesn’t actually say!

    Thanks

      Hi,

The Remo Elm door is a modern handleless MDF foil wrapped door with a wood grain effect.

    Hi
Please could you tell me which finishes are most hard wearing? I’m puzzled by foil wrapped/painted/laquered MDF etc! I really want a flush door in wood but this doesn’t seem possible?? What is the Remo Elm ? as this is the only one that doesn’t state what material it is.
I need something very robust as we have a farmhouse kitchen with stroppy teenagers, dogs, boisterous toddlers and an hysterical chef (me). I would really appreciate some advice! Thanks.

I need to order my kitchen asap but I’m stumped with how I want my corner to be. I really want a tall l shaped larder unit and you don’t offer these or the standard blank corner units. Would you be able to build a bespoke piece especially if I went for your harewood kitchen which you make. Other kitchen designers can offer a standard blank unit but then talk about creating a corner post from panel ends which my fitter is worried will look bodged. Wickes do a great mondo 2m carousel corner unit – could you do something similar. Your base revo unit is the same idea but too short. I look forward to hearing from you.

If you have handleless doors, a 900mm corner unit and an integrated undercounter fridge opening with its hinges to the corner, is it possible to get away without a corner post?

    July 15, 2014 at 2:59 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, you would still need some form of corner post as the door still needs to open, which requires at least 2 cm for a wood unit door. The thickness of the integrated fridge door would be the bare minimum that you need to ensure that that fridge door can open fully.

    Hi,

    1) Do the same storage systems exist for wall corner units; and 2) do wall corner units also need a corner post where the units meet?

    Many thanks

    July 4, 2014 at 11:03 pm
    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, the storage system wire works are only available for base units due to the 560mm depth needed to house them. Corner wall units do not require a corner post but if you are arranging 2 wall units that meet in the corner then some form of post or filler material may be required to allow the doors to open properly.

    Hi

Your corner unit video is really good but what options do you have if you want to start in a corner with a tall unit and want units on both sides of that. The only option I can see is the tall corner larder unit.. do you have any ideas please?

    • Diy Kitchens says:

Hi, we do recommend that you start with and put a corner unit into a corner. Corner units give you the space for service voids and for corner posts. You could contact our technical sales team on 01977 608 418 if you have and questions regarding this.

I’m interested in the L-Shape cabinet with the revo 90 mechanism. I noticed in the video it states that the unit is 18mm higher to accommodate the mechanism and that the plinth and feet are adjusted to deal with this.

Can you please confirm that normal units will still fit up against this without any major adjustment? I can’t quite work out how you won’t be able to see a step of 18mm at the bottom of the unit where the lower plinth joins with the standard ones at each side.

    thanks

      Hi Andy,

Good question. All the units butt up and the same size plinth is used, but a slight segment is taken out of the plinth to accommodate the Revo 90 unit. See the image below which shows a unit that has been fitted in one of our customers’ kitchen and how the plinth has been adapted.

      Hi,

Due to the wirework mechanism inside the kitchen unit, the smallest unit of this type that we can make is 950mm wide.

    Hi,

Having looked at a number of potential plans for the kitchen, the one that works best in the space has a 870mm custom corner unit. Is it possible for the fitter to reduce a dry assembled 900 X 900 L Shaped Corner Base Unit (With Shelf) from the back to make it fit the 870mm depth space?

I know you should always start at the corner, but in this case having a 900 unit would throw the rest of the run of units out.

      Hi Alex,

Certain styles of units can be adapted and we can make custom bespoke units in certain styles only. If you can send an email to our Sales Manager (matt@diy-kitchens.com) he’ll be able to tell you what is possible.

Hi i am looking at a new kitchen but have a question about corner units, specifically the magic corner unit, if the blind corner is 500mm but the thickness of the adjacent unit is 560mm(pan draw sink unit) do i need to account fot a 60mm gap on the wall or more? How much extra for the service crevice and handles of the draws?

      Hi Jim,
When ordering our units dry assembled, you would need to drill the doors and fit your own hinges to ensure that everything lines up once you have assembled them.
