How does left & right door hinging work?

Hinge Side

How to tell left handed side from right

A recently asked door hinging question by a customer was “when selecting left or right hinged units, which side is the door hinge actually on? Is it as you look at the unit or is it hinged based on looking at the unit from the inside?”

Well, when planning a new kitchen, even a simple issue like this can start racking your brain, as you don’t want to leave anything to chance! Remember, there are no such things as silly questions. If you have a question and you are unsure about something, then ask and find an answer before you proceed. A few minutes of research now can save days of pain later on down the line when it comes to fitting the kitchen

Left-hand door hinging

When you select a unit to be left-hand hinged then the hinges are on the inside left of the unit and door, as you look at it. So a door handle would put onto the right-hand side to pull the door open from right to left. See the image below.

Right-hand door hinging

When you select a unit to be right-hand hinged then the hinges are on the inside right of the unit and door, as you look at it. So a door handle would put onto the left-hand side to pull the door open from left to right. See the image below.

With handleless kitchen doors, the handle/rail is built into the top of the door, so you just need to pull the door open from the relevant side of the rail. This can lead to much amusement with guests in your kitchen, as they don’t always know how the doors are hinged and open:-)

Here is a quick video to recap the above.
